Thursday, January 1, 2026 – NYC City Hall:

So let’s break down what we just heard from the new New York City mayor, Zohran Mamdani.

What the 34 year old Democratic Socialist said on the campaign trail is what we heard again – with conviction – that he has vowed to transform the nation’s largest city with the biggest government operation – into something that history has proven just does not work.

Lets keep this in mind – the city has a one hundred and eighteen billion dollar operating budget with a diverse workforce of more than 300 hundred thousand spread out over the five boroughs, with many under union contracts and strict civil service protocols – that Mamdani has made clear – he plans to change all of this.

His campaign promises included: Universal child care, free transportation, and affordable housing – creating new units and lowering or freezing the rent for others.

APB News’s Mike Leventhal was standing right next to the main stage – taking all of this in.

Watching all of this closely are the two politicians that were on stage with Zohran. One in particular that the new mayor says he will model is governing by.

New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will seek to promote the Mamdani method across the country – in her ongoing battle with the Trump Administration and the Republican way of life in general.

Many expected – or had hoped that Mamdani would talk about Donald Trump in his speech – but he was careful and strategic and stayed away from that for now – but reminded us who is and what his mission is.

APB News was set up right next to the stage – 30 feet away from the VIP seats and watched the reaction on the face of former New York City Mayor Eric Adams throughout the ceremony – and it could not end soon enough for him… It was clearly painful…

New York Governor Kathy Hochul was watching and listening to all of this very carefully from the front row – as she will be in a battle of her own this year. Will she cave into the socialist’s agenda or push back? Will she find a way to keep the peace while raising funds from the powerful New York real estate and labor community? It’s all very complicated and for Hochul – it remains to be seen if she has the discipline for someone who constantly changes her mind and flip flops on major issues frustrating many community leaders fighting for their causes.

Its a four year term and it’s now week number 1 – everyone is watching!
