The sounds of marching bands, heritage, and celebration filled Fifth Avenue today as the 2026 Columbus Day Parade made its grand return to Midtown Manhattan. Tens of thousands lined the streets for the city’s 82nd annual celebration of Italian American culture. But while high-profile state leaders like Governor Kathy Hochul, State Controller Tom DiNapoli, Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman and New York Attorney General Letitia James were front and center, a major city figure was conspicuously absent. Mayor Zohran Mamdani skipped the parade, breaking a multi-decade tradition of New York City mayors leading the procession. Mike Leventhal was on Fifth Avenue taking in all of the political firestorm surrounding the mayor's no-show. #columbusday #zohranmamdani #kathyhochul #curtissliwa #bruceblakeman

Where is Mayor Zohran Mamdani?

High-intensity demonstrations lined the streets outside United Nations headquarters on Thursday, as competing pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian groups gathered during the UN General Assembly. While the rhetoric on the pavement was deafening, APB News was on site to look past the shouting, the megaphones, and the banners to look strictly at what is happening on the ground in the Middle East. While protesters on both sides of the barricades demand swift, absolute victories, the diplomatic truth inside the UN security chambers is that neither a military victory nor a humanitarian resolution can happen in a vacuum. It requires bilateral compliance that current geopolitical realities simply haven't allowed for yet.

UN Protests - Facts Over Rhetoric

Hundreds of anti-regime demonstrators gathered outside the United Nations headquarters in Manhattan to voice powerful opposition against the Iranian government. Organized in part by the National Council of Resistance of Iran at Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza, the rally coincided with the high-level week of the 81st UN General Assembly. The streets of Midtown Manhattan transformed into a sea of saffron, green, and white. Their goal? To demand an immediate halt to what they call an unprecedented surge of political executions in Iran, and to call on global leaders to reject the legitimacy of Tehran's delegation. The energy was absolutely electric, even as intense security locks down most of the area for the world leaders arriving. Thousands of demonstrators lined Second Avenue, chanting in both English and Farsi. APB News was invited by the National Council of Resistance of Iran, to witness the demonstration, directly timed to coincide with addresses from major world leaders. The clear message from young people - that it's time for a new government and for Iran to join the western world and for the elders clinging to power to relinquish it to the next generation. Protesters we spoke to say there are currently more than 100 political prisoners on death row in Iran right now. Their message to the UN is simple: "No to Shah, no to Mullahs, yes to a democratic republic." #iran

Protest to Stop Executions in Iran

APB News was on the scene as demonstrators sat cross-legged across multiple lanes of traffic, holding anti-administration signs and chanting slogans. Just before 9 a.m., ahead of President Trump's address to world leaders, about 30 activists marched into 2nd Avenue and 43rd Street, blocking rush-hour traffic outside the United Nations. NYPD units cordoned off the intersection and issued three warnings to disperse. When the protesters refused, officers moved in, flex-cuffed them, and loaded them onto department buses. Around 20 people were booked for disorderly conduct and obstructing traffic. All of them got desk appearance tickets and were released by early afternoon. #nypd #arrest #ungeneralassembly #unitednations #donaldtrump

Friday, September 11, 2026, Midtown Manhattan: New York’s Bryant Park displayed 2,753 empty chairs on 11 September 2026, each representing a person killed at the World Trade Center during the attacks 25 years ago. The chairs faced south toward the former Twin Towers site. Visitors wrote notes upon entering the park to offer their personal thoughts and prayers - Then was handed a carnation to find an open chair to place and then reflect. The installation remained open to the public all day which offered New Yorkers and visitors alike a place to pause, remember, and honor the lives that were lost.

Bryant Park Places 2,753 Empty Chairs to Remember the Victims of 9/11

Tuesday night, September 8, 2026 - Lower East Side APB News was on Essex Street in Manhattan, where hundreds of New Yorkers gathered to make their voices heard against what they call a dangerous rise in radical extremism and antisemitism across the five boroughs. The "Unite Against Terror" rally, organized by the grassroots movement End Jew Hatred, was strategically held right outside the headquarters of the Democratic Socialists of America at Essex Street and Straus Square. The rally included families of 9/11 victims ahead of the 25th anniversary of the tragedy. Demonstrators aimed their frustration squarely at local political leadership and the DSA, arguing that recent political rhetoric from city officials has done more to normalize hostility toward Jewish residents than to protect them. A counter demonstration broke out after months of intensifying friction in Israeli politics and the actions of the IDF which caused a faceoff between multiple groups. More multiple large-scale protests demanding the accountability of city leaders are planned before the mid term elections. The Democratic Socialists of America have not issued a formal response to the demonstration outside their offices. #jewishpride #jewishpeople #endhate #usa #apbnews

There was a medical emergency involving well-known Staten Island artist and activist Scott LoBaido. Officials say LoBaido suffered cardiac arrest Tuesday evening during the NYPD’s National Night Out event at Midland Beach. Witnesses say the incident happened after LoBaido attempted to confront New York City Mayor Mamdani during a speech. First responders rushed to the scene, performing immediate CPR and using a defibrillator to revive him. Police and EMS rushed the artist to a local hospital. Friends share online that he is awake, smiling, and recovering now.

Tuesday July 7, 2026 - Midtown Manhattan: So here is what we know - The New York City Department of Buildings Commissioner confirmed to APB News that the emergency crews and contractors that worked all night successfully installed new heavy-duty cross beams to brace the damaged main beams. Right now the construction crews are welding new galvanized steel supports to remove the weight load off the bent beams using state of the art laser monitoring systems which proved the building has stopped shifting and is completely stable. An investigation by the Department of Buildings and assigned structural engineers has started to determine the exact cause of the partial top floor collapse before any vertical construction can resume. Because the building has been stabilized, the initial frozen zones have been reduced to East 42nd and East 43rd streets between Second and Third avenues being blocked off. Most of the neighboring residents have been allowed back into their homes while nearby buildings remain under strict evacuation orders while the engineers continue to investigate and monitor the top floors of the damaged building. This is a developing story and will be updated throughout the week. @OfficialFDNY @NYCBUILDINGS

📍 June 2026 — Lower Manhattan, NY Over 2 million fans flooded Lower Manhattan to celebrate the New York Knicks' championship — and the historic ticker-tape parade quickly pushed the city to its limits. APB News was on the ground as fans climbed buildings, trees, scaffolding, and even police vehicles to catch a glimpse of the floats rolling up Broadway to City Hall. The NYPD says viewing pens hit capacity by 7:30 a.m. — just 90 minutes after gates opened and three hours before the parade began — leaving hundreds of thousands turned away and surging through barricades along the route. By the end of the overnight hours: 63 arrests, 10 officers injured, four reported slashings/stabbings, and 61 people treated by FDNY (30 hospitalized), mostly for heat exhaustion. But it wasn't all chaos. Behind City Hall, the NYPD went the extra mile — helping a group of VIP fans pass hats, shirts, and banners to players for autographs. 2 Million Flood Lower Manhattan for Knicks Parade | Lets Dive Into the Chaos!

June 2026 - Midtown Manhattan: What a beautiful day it was for a parade in Manhattan…. The annual Israel Day Parade in New York City - officially known as "Israel Day on Fifth" took place on a glorious Sunday afternoon - with tens of thousands of marchers, supporters and onlookers - all under the watch and protection of thousands of officers from the New York City Police Department. This massive event serves as the world's largest public demonstration of solidarity with Israel and brought tens of thousands of participants and spectators out to celebrate Israeli heritage and culture. The event was heavily secured by the NYPD, featuring K-9 units, undercover officers, and strict entry checkpoints. APB NEWS caught up with former State Assemblymember and New York City Council member Rory Lancman, who has launched a campaign for the New York State Senate which represents District 7, covering the North Shore of Long Island. Lancman’s platform targets lowering Long Island's cost of living, increasing government accountability, combating antisemitism, and expanding reproductive rights protection. The big news - on stage just before the parade began, New York governor Kathy Hochul announced that she just signed the Buffer Zone Bill - the legislation now creates a 50-foot security perimeter between protests and all houses of worship in the state. So who was on hand and marched, and who was not? New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said all along that he would not partake in the parade but would authorize the police department to make sure it was a safe event. Mike Leventhal was on Fifth Avenue and asked Nassau County executive Bruce Blakeman, standing with the Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon, about the mayor's absence - both had strong thoughts on that. This is a historic break from a 62-year tradition, making him the first sitting New York City mayor to skip the annual event since its inception in 1964. Politicians expressing their support for the State of Israel and to stomp out hate were: Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch who was the grand marshal, and former Mayors Mike Bloomberg and Eric Adams. The United Nations officially added Israeli armed and security forces to its blacklist of parties accused of committing sexual violence in conflict zones. In immediate retaliation, Israel's Ambassador, Danny Danon, said that Israel has completely severed all ties and frozen relations with UN Secretary-General António Guterres and his office. With more than 7,000 officers on patrol, the NYPD reported no incidents and no arrests.

It's a Case of Who Marched and Who Didn’t!

May 2026 - City Hall, NYC: Going down Zohran Mandami's to do list, the nyc mayor fired the controversial NYPD Sheriff Anthony Miranda, replacing him with NYPD whistleblower Edwin Raymond. Miranda’s dismissal was expected as Mamdani has often spoken about clearing his administration of the controversies from the previous Eric Adams administration. Raymond was an NYPD whistleblower and spent over a decade with the NYPD, retiring early in order to “lead a nationwide evolution in policing.” Raymond published a book, “An Inconvenient Cop: My Fight to Change Policing in America” back in 2023 and also was unsuccessful in a run for City Council in 2021. Miranda’s tenure as sheriff was marked by controversy, particularly over his office’s handling of illegal cannabis enforcement as well as city investigators probing reports that the Sheriff’s Office improperly seized evidence from unlicensed pot shops. During that investigation, more than $100,000 in cash inside safes at the Sheriff’s Office in Queens were discovered — from which the sheriff said that his deputies don’t collect money during raids. The safes holding the cash were discovered in large shipping containers which had been seized in a pot shop raid as well a ledger with pages torn out, insiders told the investigation team. #zohranmamdani #nypd #mamdani #policereform #whistleblower

It's day three of the Long Island Rail Road strike — and Penn Station this morning looked nothing like it usually does. The concourse at North America's busiest commuter rail hub stood nearly empty. The big departure board — normally packed with gate calls — displayed service suspended. Outside, members of five LIRR unions were on the picket line for a third straight day. About 3,500 workers walked off the job at 12:01 Saturday morning, after contract talks with the MTA collapsed over wages and healthcare premiums. The unions want a 5% raise. The MTA is offering 3%, with room to reach four-and-a-half. Negotiations resumed at 7:30 AM this morning. The MTA chairman says progress is being made — but there's no deal yet. And officials warn that even when one comes, it will take a day to resume complete service. For now, roughly 300,000 daily riders are on their own. #lirr #lirrstrike #strike #unionstrong

May 2026, Upper East Side: A New Jersey man who started the Amazon union has been charged by police for jumping a barricade while protesting in front of the Met Gala main arrival tent earlier this week. Christian Smalls, 37, of Lodi, New Jersey, was quickly arrested after he entered a restricted zone - Officers on the scene took him quickly into custody. APB News was positioned 30 feet away when this all happened to capture this exclusive video. Smalls was charged with trespassing, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, obstructing governmental administration and failure to obey a traffic device, the NYPD said. Amazon Labor Union-IBT Local 1 said that Smalls’ actions and subsequent arrest were not connected to the union and that he has not been involved in the organization since August 2024. King Charles III and Queen Camilla visited the National 9/11 Memorial in Lower Manhattan yesterday, paying tribute to the victims of the September 11th attacks on day three of their state visit to the United States, a four-day trip marking 250 years of American independence and looking ahead to the twenty-fifth anniversary of nine-eleven later this year. Dressed in mourning attire, the royal couple laid a bouquet of white flowers at the edge of the South Pool. A handwritten note read: "We honour the memory of those who tragically lost their lives. We stand in enduring solidarity with the American people in the face of profound loss." Sixty-seven British citizens were killed in the attacks — the largest loss of British life on foreign soil since the Second World War. The King and Queen spent time with surviving family members and first responders inside a tented reception area at the plaza. Mayor Zohran Mamdani joined the receiving line and briefly shook hands with the King — a fleeting exchange after Mamdani told reporters earlier in the day that, given the chance, he would "encourage" Charles to return the Koh-i-Noor diamond to India. Behind the security cordon, a small group of demonstrators gathered. Among them, Staten Island artist and activist Scott LoBaido was seen holding a photograph of Mayor Mamdani alongside streamer Hasan Piker — a reference to Piker's widely condemned 2019 remark that "America deserved 9/11," comments Mamdani called "objectionable and reprehensible" during last year's mayoral debate. The demonstration remained peaceful. The King and Queen continued on to additional engagements in the city, including stops at Harlem Grown and the New York Public Library. #royalfamily #kingcharles #queencamilla #911memorial #apbnews

April 24, 2026 - Astoria, Queens: Nearly 270 FDNY personnel, the NYPD, and EMS were on the scene on Thursday night in Astoria Queens to battler a five alarm fire at the First Reformed Church of Astoria in the early evening. APB News arrived quickly to witness the effort to extinguish the flames which first started in a building next to the church which then spread into the old church - which is considered one of the oldest religious institutions in Astoria, dating back to the 1880s. Five firefighters were taken to a nearby hospital - their condition was not released as of this morning. The FDNY confirmed that the fire marshal is now investigating the cause of this devastating fire. This is a developing story! #astoria #fire #church #fdny #queens

Wednesday, April 22, 2026 - Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn: A violent scene broke out in front of a Bedford-Stuyvesant brownstone when the NYPD and City Marshals arrived to evict a Brooklyn grandmother. APB News viewed mobile phone videos from the scene where it was clear that a NYPD sergeant grabbed NYC Council Member Chi Ossé (D-Brooklyn) and slammed him to the hard pavement while officers quickly held him to the ground - placing handcuffs on him - while leaning on him. NYPD officers took Ossé to the local precinct, as it is not clear if he was placed under arrest or will be charged for interfering in the police action. APB News was told by sources that NYC mayor Zohran Mamdani was made aware of this incident. Longtime resident Carmella Charrington had just spent six days on Rikers Island, held in contempt for a guardianship case tied to the brownstone property. This is a complicated issue involving property deed theft through schemes related to forged documents, a short-sale, using foreclosure-rescue scams and other means - make it unclear who actually owns this house. The Brooklyn District Attorney has dropped all charges against Timothy Brown, a man who was violently beaten by NYPD detectives in a case of mistaken identity. The incident, which took place on Tuesday of this week was captured on a viral video that has led to an internal investigation. Video footage shows two plainclothes detectives punching, kicking, and kneeing Brown. He was slammed into a glass shelf, which shattered, and then dragged through the broken glass. Brown sustained a broken nose, a black eye, and various contusions. He required 27 stitches in his legs and face. The NYPD confirmed the detectives were part of a "planned and supervised" undercover drug operation but targeted the wrong person because he "matched the description" of a suspect. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch described the video as "deeply disturbing". The two detectives involved have been placed on modified duty, and their guns and shields have been removed pending an investigation by the Internal Affairs Bureau. Two pilots are dead. Forty-one people are injured. And it may all come down to one air traffic controller doing the job of two.
