Many areas of the city are starting to look and smell like the old Fresh Kills Landfill after a snowstorm delayed trash pickup – leaving growing mountains of refuse across the sidewalk leaving New Yorkers angry with the City’s slow response.
NYC mayor Zohran Mamdani warned again this week that garbage trucks that were first handling snow removal will now finally start making its regularly scheduled trash pickups.
Frustrated residents say the trucks can’t come soon enough.
APB News saw mountains of bagged trash stacked up on the side streets as well as Seventh Avenue making it difficult for people to walk on the sidewalks.
The Department of Sanitation told APB News that it was dealing with the backlog that was created from the snowstorm and freezing temperatures and acknowledged the accumulation of “tons of trash & recycling at curbs throughout NYC” will be picked up.
The Department urged New Yorkers to continue to leave their garbage curbside and said it will get to it.
