The measure makes NY the sixth and largest state to recognize gay marriage. The bill passed by a 33-29 margin. There were immediate celebratory rallies in Greenwich village and Times Square. Gov. Cuomo then signed the meaure five minutes before midnight. The law takes effect on the 24th of July which is a Sunday, so the marriage licenses can’t be handed out until Monday the 25th.
