November 5, 2012: Long lines of cars and frustrated consumers line Long Islands streets.
Much of Long Island’s gas arrives by barge from New Jersey and elsewhere on the eastern seaboard and is then unloaded at Port Jefferson and Inwood, to be stored at terminals before being trucked to service stations. The supply dried up following the storm, as pipelines, refineries and terminals shut down. Gas stations lost power. Debris left New York Harbor impassable.
