There’s nothing quite like New York City during the holidays. Every year, upwards of a million visitors from all different walks of life flock to the City to witness the magic of this time of the year.

New York City is famous for its holiday  traditions, and perhaps none is more famous than the unveiling of the colorful window displays. Most notably, those at Saks flagship store on Fifth Avenue and Bergdorf Goodman’s which gather spectators from all over the world.

This year, Bergdorf Goodman’s theme was “Isn’t it Brilliant”, with each of its window displays featuring a collection of sparkly props with titles. The installation, which took just over 3 weeks and 25 people to complete, was described by Mr. Hoey, Bergdorf’s window designer as “a little bit of theater…a little bit of fashion… it’s a little bit of commercial art.”

Saks Fifth Avenue’s window displays feature a first-time holiday collaboration with design powerhouse, Dior. Each window follows different aspects of Mr. Dior’s historic first visit to the United States in 1947. Marc Matrick, CEO Saks described the windows as “the most ambitious in Saks history.” Rockefeller’s ice rink, Saks Flagship Store, and Times Square during NYE were just some of the many small-scale renditions of NYC’s iconic landmarks featured in their festive display.

Both tourists and New Yorkers alike stopped to admire the thoughtfully placed details sprinkled throughout midtown.

In addition to these displays, Saks revealed the “Carousel of Dreams”, a nearly 10 story tall installation, featuring 300,000 LEDs, hand crafted and painted pieces, composed of zodiac signs, and classic Dior symbols like stars and flowers. This nightly show was coined, “an ode to the magic of creation in all its forms” by Dephine Arnault, CEO of Dior Couture.

And magical it is, both for New Yorkers and tourists alike, who gather nightly to experience the show and festive window displays themselves.

Aside from admiring the holiday decorations, onlookers also shared sentiments about what they would like during the holiday season aside from physical presents.
